Workshop of New Media in the Visual Arts

This is a learning project organized by the ‘WORKSHOP OF NEW MEDIA IN THE VISUAL ARTS’ in AUTH. Developments in the field of New Media are very fast. New Media occupy an important area in the field of contemporary artistic practice worldwide. New Media in the Visual Arts is the most recently established direction of the Department of Visual and Applied Arts, which started its operation in 2018. The Department of Visual and Applied Arts of the Faculty of Fine Arts of the AUTH is the first in Greece who obtained an autonomous New Media Major in undergraduate studies in visual arts. The workshop has as its purpose the cultivation and promotion of artistic research and knowledge in the field of the creation of visual artistic work in combination with the formative possibilities of new technologies, with a view to their aesthetic and technical perfection as well as the their conceptual content and their theoretical support. Participants develop skills in composition, aesthetics, design, the use of digital media as well as theoretical research and critical thinking in order to acquire sufficient resources and the necessary training to secure a job and a professional career.

The Challenge:
With the term New Media of Visual Arts we refer to artistic works created with the use of new technolo-gies and their combination such as digital art (digital art, software art), digital photography (digital photography), digital graphics (computer graphics), digital animation ( digital video, computer animation), internet art, hactivism, interactive art, Virtual, Augmented and Mixed Reality art, digital 3D printing, robotic art (robotic art) and art of video games (video games) etc. Their practice spreads from video art (vid-eo art) to installations (installations) and performing arts (performance).

Target Groups/Clients:
University students and anyone with an interest in visual arts (artists, art professionals, gallery owners).

Solutions:
The basic principle of the workshop is the combined artistic, technological and theoretical research. Special emphasis is placed on cooperation and teamwork. Special emphasis is also placed on individualized teaching so that students can develop their own special artistic characteristics and abilities to the maximum extent, making them an active member of the learning process. The Department of New Visual Arts Media provides excellent artistic education. It develops basic research skills of students so that they can collect, select, analyze, synthesize and judge information. It develops the ability to understand theories and ideas and their critical ability towards complex situations and issues. They acquire resources to act effectively under any conditions individually or in groups at an academic level and acquire skills in presenting their ideas and communicating with others.

Innovation:
The workshop provides excellent artistic education. It develops basic research skills that participants can collect, select, analyze, synthesize and judge informa-tion. It develops the ability to understand theories and ideas and their critical ability towards complex situa-tions and issues. In addition, the laboratory carries out educational and research actions and visits, presenta-tions at conferences and educational meetings, par-ticipation in art exhibitions and festivals, Erasmus ex-changes and collaborations with other schools in Greece and abroad and seeks synergies with institu-tions and connection with society.

Impact:
They acquire resources to act effectively under any conditions individually or in groups at an academic level and acquire skills in presenting their ideas and communicating with others. The students acquire self-discipline, sensitivity to culture and at the same time develop their personal artistic point of view. Gradu-ates of the New Media Visual Arts Department are well prepared and have the necessary training and skills to claim positions in Master’s Programs. At the same time, they are excellently prepared candidates for jobs that require technological and artistic skills and will cover a large part of the needs of the labor market.
